◇ New Year's Greeting ◇
[partial translation]
As we bid farewell to the Year of the Fire Tiger (1926) and welcome the joyous New Year of the Wood Rabbit (1927), I first extend my congratulations on the health and well-being of all our members, and express my deepest gratitude for your unwavering support. Since the earthquake, this marks the third New Year, during which time our theatrical world has seen unprecedented growth. Last year, in particular, was marked by remarkable success, rarely seen in modern theatrical history.
At the same time, our magazine, Engei Shashinchō, the oldest specialized publication in the performing arts, has shown outstanding development and now occupies the top position among all pictorial publications and magazines related to the performing arts, achieving monthly growth even amid the so-called economic downturn.

Onoe Matsusuke [IV, 1843-1928] as Kyūsaku
Designed by Mr. Kawase Hasui
Regarding the featured kuchi-e [frontispiece] 'Thirty-Six Selected Actors', Mr. Onoe Matsusuke is 85 years old this year, and yet his stage performance surpasses that of young actors—no, it goes even further, showing such energy that it could be said the young performers can't keep up with him. This year happens to be a particularly significant year for him, so in celebration of his health, we requested the esteemed artist Hasui to capture his image at the beginning of the year.

*Translation of biography appearing beneath Sawamura's portrait.
Real name: Yamanaka Sōjirō.
Guild name: Kinokuniya.
Official crest: the character i (い) within a circle.
He was born on November 1, 1902, in Imado-machi, Asakusa Ward, Tokyo. His father was Sawamura Sōjūrō, the younger brother of Takaya Takasuke and the elder brother of Sawamura Tosshō [訥升].
In 1909, he made his stage debut at the Kabukiza under the name Nakamura Jirō. He later entered the Imperial Theatre together with his father, and in May 1920 assumed the name Sawamura Tanosuke V, which he bears today.
He is now highly popular as one of the leading young stars of the Imperial Theatre. At a time when the theatrical world is suffering from a shortage of onnagata actors, his future has become a focus of attention among theater enthusiasts everywhere.
In the Imperial Theatre’s June production of Kumagai Jinya, appearing alongside Kōshirō as Kumagai and Baikō as Sagami, he played Fuji no Kata and gave a confident, dignified performance that won the praise of theater critics, an achievement still fresh in the public memory.

*Four Short Comedies: Masuda Tarō Kaja’s comedies, a regular feature of the actresses’ productions, invariably become a center of attention at each engagement. This time as well, Four Short Comedies attracted great interest through the novelty of their ideas and the performances of the cast, especially the unusual comic role played by the veteran Matsusuke [Onoe Matsusuke IV].
**Kane Morotomo Urami no Samezaya: Enjaku, Senjaku, Masajirō, Enjo, together with Jusaburō, Kasen, Daikichi, and other leading figures of Kansai kabuki, appeared at the Matsushima Yachiyoza from July 2 through July 12. The first piece on the program was “Taijū” [the tenth act of Ehon Taikōki], the second was this “Tsuma-Hachi” [the Otsuma–Hachirōbei play - Kane Morotomo Urami no Samezaya], and the concluding piece was one act of Sarayashiki, the scene at Tetsuzan’s mansion.
***Shōgitai: The July engagement at the Shimbashi Enbujō, billed as the tenth-anniversary performance of the Shinkokugeki, presented three new works: Mayama Seika’s Shōgitai, in two acts and four scenes; Nakamura Kichizō’s Hoshi Tōru, in five acts and nine scenes; and Kaneko Yōbun’s Hair, in three acts and five scenes. The program was extremely well received. As always, one can only admire Sawada’s exceptional judgment.

*Hachiman Matsuri Yomiya no Nigiwai: The second piece, Hachiman Matsuri Yomiya no Nigiwai, was written by Kawatake Mokuami for the Ichimuraza in the seventh month of Man’en 1 [1860]. With the celebrated Kodanji as the crepe-cloth merchant Shinsuke and Kumesaburō as Miyokichi, it was an enormous success. Today it has become one of Kichiemon’s signature plays and is well received whenever it is performed.
**Sahei Kōmyōroku: “Sahei’s Record of Achievement” is a two-act play set first in a shrine grove at the foot of a mountain and then in the mountains. At the end of the Warring States period, Sahei, servant to a wealthy villager named Jinbei, is an extreme coward. When Jinbei’s daughter Oshino is attacked by bandits, Jinbei announces that whoever rescues her will receive everything from his house and lands to Oshino herself. Sahei therefore ventures alone into the bandits’ hideout and, through good fortune, succeeds in defeating them.

*Do Not Betray Your Husband: Kondō Keiichi’s new play Otto ni somuku nakare, another work drawing on the secrets of the motion-picture studio, appears to have taken its inspiration from the well-known Yoshiko–Ryōichi elopement, [the real-life elopement during the filming of La Dame aux Camélias of the actress Okada Yoshiko and her co-star Takeuchi Ryōichi resulting in their dismissal by the Nikkatsu studio.]
The lower photograph shows the scene following Act II, set on the dark stage at the Yamano Film Studio; the upper photograph shows the final scene, set at Yamano’s home.
** Hoshi Tōru: A new work written by Nakamura Kichizō for the Shinkokugeki company, a large-scale play in five acts and nine scenes. It portrays Hoshi, one of the outstanding figures in the history of Japan's constitutional government, who displayed extraordinary political prowess in the early Diet, ranging freely over his life from his tenure as chief of the Yokohama Customs House in 1873 [Meiji 6] to his final moments in the Tokyo Municipal Council chamber in 1901 [Meiji 34]. The play aroused the interest of the general public, whether or not they were theater enthusiasts, and, combined with the dedicated performances of Sawada and the rest of the company, won exceptionally favorable reviews.

*Taijū: The Kabukiza's July presentation of the Amagasaki scene from Taikōki, as shown in this photograph, brought together a remarkable cast of the foremost actors of the day: Chūsha as Mitsuhide, Baikō as Misao, Uzaemon as Jūjirō, Sōjūrō as Hatsugiku, Sadanji as Hisayoshi, and Gennosuke as Satsuki. It was a splendid production of a kind rarely seen in recent years.
Denjirō, newly renamed Tosshi VIII, appeared as Satō Masakiyo, holding his own among these celebrated actors. His performance was an admirable success, giving his new career under the name an exceptionally auspicious beginning, and he himself must surely have felt thoroughly satisfied.
**Jitsuroku Sendai Hagi: The company of Kanya, Shūchō, Sonosuke, Takegorō, Kingo, Monnosuke, Sukejūrō, and Shūka began its tour at the Shizuoka Kabukiza on July 1, then toured along the Tōkaidō route, receiving favorable reviews at each stop.
Sendai Hagi was one of the works in their repertoire, and the photograph was taken at the Shizuoka Kabukiza.
